The Matrix is a 1999 American science fiction action film written and directed by the Wachowskis, and produced by Joel Silver. Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano, and as the first installment in the Matrix franchise, it depicts a dystopian future in which humanity is unknowingly trapped inside a simulated reality, the Matrix, which intelligent machines have created to distract humans while using their bodies as an energy source. When computer programmer Thomas Anderson, under the hacker alias “Neo”, uncovers the truth, he “is drawn into a rebellion against the machines” along with other people who have been freed from the Matrix.
The Matrix is another film that I waited along time to watch. I’m not going to lie, it was because the things I heard (complex plot), was extremely daunting. One day, I told myself that I was going to watch it, I basically forced myself to pick up the remote and put it on. Once the end-credits rolled, I realised how much of a fool I was, I was a fool for not watching it sooner.
The Matrix is the best cyberpunk, dystopian science-fiction film ever made. It is truly a generational, once in a lifetime film; films this good don’t come around often. There’s many different aspects and things to this film. It can get a little confusing, but I assure you, once those credits role; only then does everything blend together to make truly, one of the best films ever made. Don’t take this lightly.
I love the whole style and asthetic to this film, I’m a sucker for cyberpunk, everything from the sets, to the clothes, it has this in bucket loads. I love the pacing of this film, there’s so many different things and angles going on, but I never felt like the movie was slow or fast, it was the perfect pace.
You can really see the Wachowksi’s writing and directing prowess in this film. The story is complex and smart, and it really makes us (the viewer) engaged. The dialogue is amazing, it’s funny, smart and serious. The charactres feel like real people, and they never get boring or unwatchable.
In my opinion, one of the best things about this film is the cast. Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss are all brilliant as our main protagonists, they boss the screen and we are almost fighting off the agents with them from the other side of the screen. Hugo Weaving is brilliant as Agent Smith, the best thing an actor can do as a villian is to build up real hate from the viewer, I actually had real hate for him. He’s evil, twisted and maniacal, and he poses a genuine threat.
Hands down, the best character in this film is Neo (Reeves), the story-ark that he has is one of the best in film. How he starts as a petty computer hacker, and we see him grow both mentally and physically into ‘the chosen one’, it’s simply genius writing. Keanu Reeves really does show the acting ability he holds in this film, the fact that he can have said story-ark, and I fully believe it, it’s just anothter positive in the long line of positives about this film.
This film was made in 1999, the CGI is absolutely amazing for the year it came out. The CGI is sort of outdated, but it certainly doesn’t take away from the film. I guess this is sort of a negative, a small one at that. The scene in which Neo dodges the bullets was completely revolutionary, it was the first of its kind. The way in which they used all of the cameras to create the scene, it truly is one of the most important scenes in modern film history. Especially for the use of green screens and CGI.
Overall, I think that you know what I’m going to say, The Matrix truly is one of the greatest films of all time, a marvel of filmmaking. What this film has done for modern cinema alone, it can’t even be summed up in words. I’m gonna say it, this is a masterpiece, and as far as I’m concerned, is in the same bracket as The Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption, watch this film guys.
