The Magnificent Seven is a 1960 American Western film directed by John Sturges and starring Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach and Steve McQueen. The supporting cast features Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, James Coburn and Horst Buchholz.
The film is western remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai. Brynner, McQueen, Bronson, Vaughn, Dexter, Coburn and Buchholz portray the title characters, a group of seven gunfighters hired to protect a small village in Mexico from a group of marauding bandits and their leader Calvera (Eli Wallach).
The film’s musical score was composed by Elmer Bernstein.
This is truly a western classic with plenty of action, but along with this there are some really poignant scenes.
The seven are gunfighters, having done terrible things in the past but there is also a sense of honour amongst them, they are men of priniciple choosing to do the right thing in sacrificing themselves to protect the villagers.
It’s a common theme of the few against the many and is a packed with action, although the final third is a little slow.
This is one of my favourite films and would highly recommend watching.
