The Christmas Chronicles is a 2018 Netflix original Christmas comedy.
In Lowell, Massachusetts, near Christmas, widowed mother Claire Pierce (Williams-Paisley) is struuglimg to hold her family together after the death of her firefighter husband.
Her son Teddy (Lewis) has lost the Christmas spirit after the death of his father whereas daughter Kate (Camp) is still a true believer.
On Christmas Eve, Claire has to work late which means Teddy has to stay in to look after Kate. While looking through some old video’s, Kate believes she has seen Santa delivering presents to their house so her and Teddy decide to wait up for Santa to visit.
After falling asleep and being awoke by a trap they set they realise that Santa is real and has left his sleigh parked out in the street, so they decide to stow away. During the flight, the discovery of the children causes Santa to lose control of the sleigh and crash land in Chicago. In the commotion, Santa’s sack of presents along with his magic hat, the source of his powers has been lost.
After Santa is arrested and jailed, it is up to Kate and Teddy to find the sack, contact the elves and save Christmas.
As Christmas films go it’s a familiar story elevated by the fact that it’s Kurt Russell as Santa, frickin Kurt Russell! who manages to breathe life into a pretty mediocre script with a larger than life portrayal of the big man.
The film does succumb to the usual excessive sentimentality of this type of film, but overall is a pleasant distraction.
