Shutter Island is a 2010 American neo-noir psychological thriller film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Laeta Kalogridis, based on Dennis Lehane’s 2003 novel of the same name. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Deputy U.S. Marshal Edward “Teddy” Daniels, who is investigating a psychiatric facility on Shutter Island after one of the patients goes missing. Mark Ruffalo plays his partner and fellow deputy marshal, Ben Kingsley is the facility’s lead psychiatrist, Max von Sydow is a German doctor, and Michelle Williams is Daniels’ wife.

When I sat down to watch this film, I had high expectations, just from the fact that it is a Scorsese film. I wasn’t let down at all, I was actually very pleasantly surprised. It’s not a usual Scorsese gangster movie, this just shows how diverse a director Scorsese is. Just the writing and direction alone, makes this movie amazing. The way the characters are and how they react to things, no one does this better than Scorsese.

The cast of this film is brilliant, you’ve got two generational actors in Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, and a Shakespearean trained veteran; Ben Kingsley. DiCaprio and Ruffalo bounce off of eachother and they lead this film brilliantly. Also, Kingsley just adds another great performance to his already stacked resume.

I love the story of this film, it is thought out and executed well, it also comes as a massive shock, and not one that you can see from a million miles away. It’s very hard, especially now-a-days, to come out with a completely unique story, just due to the fact there’s so many films that have been made. This is a unique story that is both thrilling and memorable.

There’s a couple things that aren’t necesserily negatives, they just hold the film back a bit. Firstly, even though the story is brilliant and unique, it is a tiny bit far fetched at times. Lastly, the CGI isn’t the best, and it does kind of date the film. Apart from, that, this film is only positives.

Overall, give this film a watch, it’s not Scorsese’s best but you will certainly have a great time with it.
