Gone Girl is a 2014 American thriller neo-noir film directed by David Fincher and with a screenplay by Gillian Flynn based on her 2012 novel of the same title. The film stars Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Carrie Coon, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, and Kim Dickens. Set in Missouri, the story is a postmodern mystery, that follows the events surrounding Nick Dunne (Affleck), who becomes the prime suspect in the sudden disappearance of his wife Amy (Pike).
I must admit, I put off watching this film for a few years, mainly because I was still in the headspace that Ben Affleck was still the same actor as the early 2000’s. Newsflash; he isn’t. I am actually quite ashamed of myself that I didn’t grow up watching this film.
Right off the bat, I think that the story is fascinting and genuinely intriguing. The way it’s able to put you on the edge of your seat, but also question everything about the film, it’s absolutely genius. I love the way it takes you one way but then throws a huge spanner in the works. It completely turns this film upside down and makes it almost feel like a different film.
Ben Affleck is brilliant, he really shows the mature acting ability that he posesses. He is our ‘anchor’ in this film and he carries the emotions and feelings that us; the viewer, are feeling.
Rosamund Pike puts in a brilliant performance, arguably the best of her career. She plays her role brilliantly and you can see her as the charcater and not the actor. She is a great antagonist that somewhat has genuine reasons for what she does, this also makes it an intriguing watch.
Overall, give this film a watch if you’re looking for an absolute thrill, you certainly won’t be dissapointed.
