Batman Begins is a 2005 superhero film directed by Christopher Nolan and written by Nolan and David S. Goyer. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, it stars Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy, Tom Wilkinson, Rutger Hauer, Ken Watanabe, and Morgan Freeman. The film reboots the Batman film series, telling the origin story of Bruce Wayne from the death of his parents to his journey to become Batman and his fight to stop Ra’s al Ghul and the Scarecrow from plunging Gotham City into chaos.
Batman… The Dark Knight… The Caped Crusader, he is one of the most iconic film characters of all time. First starting out as a comic, then getting his own TV show and movie in 1966, starring Adam West. We then got the outdated, campy Batman films of the late 80’s and 90’s finishing off with (sigh), Batman & Robin. This film put the final dent in Batman’s cinematic run, putting nipples on a bat suit, I mean come on!?
Yes 1997 saw the last of Batman on the big screen. I mean, how could anybody go from there? It completely made a mockery out of Batman, who’s meant to be a dark mysterious character. The sets looked like they should’ve been on a kids show.
Well in 2005 Christopher Nolan brought out his own Batman film. The first part of a new trilogy. He was going to tell the origins of Batman. If you thought that this film was going to be anything like the Batman films before it; then you really need to give your head a wobble.
Christopher Nolan gives us a thrilling, gritty and dark film that just happens to feature Batman in. What I’m trying to say is that it has all of the Batman characters in, as well as Gotham City; but it is first and foremost a gritty action-thriller film.
It takes us through what makes Batman, Batman. It shows us his training and the death of his parents. It introduces genuinely fascinating villains including Ra’s al Ghul and The Scarecrow. They have genuine reasons for why they do the things they do, not just for the sake of it. That’s the most important thing, it has purpose. It stays true to the charcter of Batman, and does him justice.
Pair this with Christian Bale, who plays The Caped Crusader. He embodies what it means to be Batman. You can truly see he pulled out all the stops to perfect the character.
In conclusion, Batman Begins is a great film to start off the legendary Dark Knight Trilogy. Even if you don’t really like Batman, you truly are missing out.
