Aliens is a 1986 science fiction action film written and directed by James Cameron. It is the sequel to the 1979 science fiction horror film Alien, and the second film in the Alien franchise. Set in the far future, the film stars Sigourney Weaver as Lieutenant Ellen Ripley, the sole survivor of an alien attack on her ship. When communications are lost with a human colony on the moon on which her crew first encountered the alien creatures, Ripley agrees to return to the site with a troop of colonial marines to investigate. Aliens features Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, and Carrie Henn in supporting roles.
I’d put Aliens in a very special group of films along with; Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2: Judgement Day and The Dark Knight, these are all films (in my opinion) that are better than their originals.
To say that Aliens is better than Alien may seem controversial, but the saying ‘you’re either an Alien guy or an Aliens guy’ is relevant here as I am a huge Aliens guy. That’s not to say that I don’t love the atmospheric cramped original, I think it’s an absolute classic. I just love the all out, all guns blazing action of it’s sequal.
To say that it builds on it’s original would be a massive understatement. Sigourney Weaver reprises her role as Ellen Ripley and is more badass than ever. Michael Biehn is also a great competent character in this film, along with his team of marines. One of the marines; being played by Bill Paxton, is a fan favourite.
Like I said, this film has everything you want from an action-science fiction film. A great cast, a great script, a brilliant score from James Horner and most importantly, action.
