A Quiet Place Part II is a 2020 American horror film, and the sequel to 2018’s A Quiet Place, following the family from the first film as they continue to navigate and survive in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by blind aliens with an acute sense of hearing. The film was written, produced, and directed by John Krasinski under Paramount Pictures. Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe reprise their roles from the first film while Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou join the cast; Krasinski returns from the first film in a new flashback sequence.
First off, I love the intro to this film, it shows the first day of when and how the creatures started to attack. It is a tense scene in which we see how our characters act in the first moments against the creatures. It sets up this film brilliantly and it puts us right into the action.
I like how the film continues on the story and the lore of the last, it does certain things well in which it adds to it, rather than take away.
I love Cillian Murphy in this film, we learn a bit about him, but not enough to make him ‘known’ to us. We really get to see the acting ability that he possesses, and as the main character, he carries the film well.
Now, I’m afraid to say that the positives about this film end about there.
After the opening scene, the film sets off seconds after the original, as we see our characters leaving the house. It doesn’t do good job of explaining how they survived the other aliens rushing towards them at the end of the last film. All it does is show a few dead bodies of the aliens, this is a bit of a disappointment in my opinion. Although it’s a minor thing, this isn’t the best start.
In the first one, it was made out that any little sound could put our characters in danger, even whispering. In the second film, our characters are much louder without any consequences e.g. Evelyn (Blunt) with the wire fence. This is a bit of a problem as one of the worst things a sequel can do, is change things up without any explanation.
I felt like they really missed with the tension in this film. In the first one, the film was built on tension in which it had us on the very edge of our seat, I felt with this film, they either didn’t take the tension anywhere, or it quickly dispersed. This is a major thing as these films rely on tension, when you take this away, this film isn’t the best.
Evelyn (Blunt) is sort of in limbo during this film, in the first one, she plays the biggest part, in this one, she sort of does nothing. This is a real negative because she is one of the many shining lights in the original. It’s annoying to see such a strong character reduced to the sidelines. Along with this, there is no real character development, and that is one of the things I dislike about a film.
They cut some corners with the writing in my opinion, just the fact that the boat that had the creature on, it just happened to make its way to the island. This is lazy writing, and it really does take away from the film.
The ending is very similar to its original, as it’s already been done, I just wasn’t that invested in it.
Overall, this film is very frustrating, just down to what could of been. A great cast, a unique premise, it all goes down to execution. The film just wasn’t executed as well as I would’ve hoped. There’s a few things that prevent it from being a ‘bad’ film, but yeah, the high hopes I had from this film, I was quite disappointed .
