A Quiet Place is a 2018 American horror film directed by John Krasinski and written by Bryan Woods, Scott Beck and Krasinski from a story conceived by Woods and Beck. The plot revolves around a father (Krasinski) and a mother (Emily Blunt) who struggle to survive and raise their children (Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe) in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by blind monsters with an acute sense of hearing.
I saw this film in the cinema when it first came out, and like almost every other film, it heightens everything this film goes for. That’s why I watched it on TV again, last night. Obviously, it’s a much different viewing experience, but I still loved it.
First off, I love the whole premise of this movie, I’m not embarrassed to say that I’m a sucker for films set in one place, this film is mostly set in the house of our main characters. I love the ‘creatures’ in this film, they are intimidating and they pose a genuine threat to our characters. It’s also a refreshing twist that the creatures rely on their sense of hearing to hunt, this brings a whole new dynamic to the film, as our characters have to act in a way that is different than usual.
Due to the creatures intense hearing, our main characters are hardly allowed to make a sound, they aren’t even allowed to speak to each other. They communicate via sign language. It’s certainly different to see a film in which there is hardly any dialogue, I appreciate this because it’s a very hard thing to write.
This film knows how and when to use tension, it executes it at just the right time which truly puts you on the edge of your seat, the tension is not too long in which you’re just sat there waiting for something to happen, nor is it too short where it’s not effective.
One of the most tense scenes in the film is when Evelyn (Blunt),gives birth to a newborn baby. The fact that her family are all out of the house, and one of the creatures is prowling around, it’s a stuff of nightmares. The fact that she cannot make a sound is really uneasy, this is such an effective scene.
When the kids are somewhere around the ranch, the two parents talk, Evelyn says to Lee (Krasinksi), “You have to protect them. Promise me you will protect them.” SPOILER This is said right before he sacrifices himself to save his kids, this makes his death so much more meaningful and effective.
There’s only a few minor things that I don’t like about this film. I don’t like the fact in which the film sets up literally any small detail e.g. the car that the kids hide in, or the fact that the creatures can’t hear you near running water, it just seems like it’s trying too hard and takes away from the tension when they’ve explained it earlier.
Apart from this minor problem, this film is amazing. It’s a unique film in which we see the real strength of a family when posed with the threat of a creature that kills. It has an ending that will leave you wanting more, watch this one guys.
