Armageddon is a 1998 American science fiction disaster film produced and directed by Michael Bay, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and released by Touchstone Pictures. The film follows a group of blue-collar deep-core drillers sent by NASA to stop a gigantic asteroid on a collision course with Earth. It stars Bruce Willis and an ensemble cast comprising Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler, Owen Wilson, Will Patton, Peter Stormare, William Fichtner, Michael Clarke Duncan, Keith David, and Steve Buscemi.

This film is the quintessential ‘popcorn movie’, a film that you can put on whenever you feel like watching one. You can just switch off and have a great time, it’s not like a serious drama in which it takes you through all of the emotions.

It’s a Michael Bay film, and this film is filled with ‘Michael Bayism’s’. It’s over the top, there’s as much jeopardy as possible in this film, and it has the huge a-list filled cast you’d expect from a Michael Bay film. This film knows what it’s doing and it doesn’t give a shit.

It’s a classic 90’s action film, it has a bullshit plot, oil riggers are asked to drill into and blow up an asteroid that’s about to crash into into the earth. It’s absolutely crazy, yes that’s the word to describe this film; crazy. Like I said, it doesn’t need to be this complex plot.

I think that the best part about this film is the fact that there are some genuinely unbelievable scenes, I use the word unbelievable in the context of completely batshit crazy. You just have all out action, there’s never a dull moment. Also the cast is great and they have unbelievable amounts of chemistry between them.

One thing that completely shocked me about this film; it has emotion and stakes. Now the stakes part ain’t that surprising due to the fact there’s stakes in basically every action movie ever, it’s the fact that this film can make a grown man cry. The ending (that I won’t be giving away), you’re gonna need to whip out the tissues for this one.

Now we get into the negatives, it’s no surprise that this film does have a few. Firstly, the dialogue isn’t very good, it’s that 90’s cheese you’d expect from the decade. Same with the action scenes, like I said before though, you don’t watch this film expecting it to have Shawshank levels of writing, you watch this film for a good, easy time.

Overall, I think this film is a blast, it’s easy to watch, just expect some 90’s cheese throughout.
