Zodiac is a 2007 American historical mystery thriller film directed by David Fincher from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt based on the 1986 non-fiction book of the same title by Robert Graysmith. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr. with Anthony Edwards, Brian Cox, Elias Koteas, Donal Logue, John Carroll Lynch, Chloƫ Sevigny, Philip Baker Hall and Dermot Mulroney in supporting roles.
The film tells the story of the manhunt for the Zodiac Killer, a serial murderer who terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area during the late 1960s and early 1970s, taunting police with letters, bloodstained clothing, and ciphers mailed to newspapers. The case remains one of the United States’ most infamous unsolved crimes.
Believe or not, I wasn’t into The Zodiac killings and everything surrounding them, did I know about them? Yes. Did I care? No. That was my mindset until I saw this film. It completely transformed me from someone not caring, into someone that had to know all about The Zodiac killings.
David Fincher is one of my favourite directors of all time, I literally love everything he does, that’s why I had to watch this film. I didn’t go into it with much high expectations, I came out of it a fool. The reason I was a fool? Because I hadn’t watched this film earlier.
I love a film that is; 1. Well Paced, 2. Well Written, 3. Well Directed and 4. Well Executed, this film has it all. As well as having these, it also has a great cast. Robert Downey Jr. was controversially cast in this film (due to past events), he completely hit back at the critics and he shows the world class acting ability he possesses. He practically got the job of Iron Man in the MCU from this film. Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo perfectly bounce off one another, never keeping us at bay.
This film is built on tension and it has bucket loads of it. The fact that we never get to see what The Zodiac looks or sounds like, that he could be anywhere and no where at the same time. It’s almost as if he’s supernatural. This puts us on the edge of our seat. I love the different interrogation scenes, the multiple different suspects just adds to this tension.
Overall, I don’t have anything bad to say about this film, it delivers on what it was going for. It truly is a marvel of the crime thriller genre and a definite must watch.
