Demolition Man is a 1993 American science fiction action film directed by Marco Brambilla in his directorial debut. It stars Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock, and Nigel Hawthorne. Stallone is John Spartan, a risk-taking police officer, who has a reputation for causing destruction while carrying out his work. After a failed attempt to rescue hostages from evil crime lord Simon Phoenix (Snipes), they are both sentenced to be cryogenically frozen in 1996. Phoenix is thawed for a parole hearing in 2032, but escapes. Society has changed and all crime has seemingly been eliminated. Unable to deal with a criminal as dangerous as Phoenix, the authorities awaken Spartan to help capture him again.
Demolition Man is one of those films in which I know isn’t going to win any Oscars, it isn’t a good film in the traditional sense. But it fully delivers in what it’s going for, and that is action and thrills. This is why I love this film.
I mean, any film starring Sylvester Stallone already has an advantage, and pair that up with Wesley Snipes, you’ve got a winning formula.
One of the things I love about the film is the back and fourth between our two main characters, John Spartan(Sylvester Stallone) and Simon Phoenix(Wesley Snipes). It really is entertaining and they both go all out for this film.
This film, of course, has action. The action is amazing and it’s what you’d expect from a film containing these two actors. It also delivers on the trills front too, with a brilliant car chase scene.
The best part about the film without a shadow of doubt, is Wesley Snipes. Even though he’s meant to be the bad guy in this film. He’s cocky, arrogant and I absolutely am here for it. He’s genuinely funny and he has certain remarks that will make you physically laughing. He certainly heightens the enjoyment factor of this film.
There are a few negatives with this film, it follows the same tropes as almost every other 90’s action film, this ain’t exactly the film’s fault though. The writing is quite bad and the dialogue isn’t the best, but once again, that’s because it’s a 90’s action film.
Overall, this film makes for a great watch, it’s entertaining and it is a quintessential 90’s action film. It’s got brilliant characters and you can really overlook the negatives.
